    Summary

    The Autism Treatment Network (ATN) is a collaboration of Autism Speaks and some of the finest children's hospitals and academic institutions in North America, specializing in multi-disciplinary medical care for children with autism. Together, they work to develop evidence-based protocols and standards of care for many of the most challenging medical conditions surrounding autism today. ATN best practices are shared with physicians and medical facilities nationwide to improve outcomes for all children with autism.

    The Autism Treatment Network provides state-of-the-art autism-related information, services and support from nationally renowned clinicians, researchers, specialists, hospitals and academic institutions for families, medical professionals and researchers across North America who share a common commitment to:
    • Provide a comprehensive, coordinated, multidisciplinary care approach for children with ASD.
    • Improve autism healthcare outcomes through high-quality, data-driven, evidence-based medical care.
    • Support families, community clinicians, medical professionals through information-sharing tools, best practices and research studies.
    • Advance the understanding and application of new knowledge at the front lines of clinical practice.
    • Engage in and support research relevant to clinical practice of the most complex medical conditions related to autism
    The Network supports:
    • Family-Centered, Multidisciplinary Team-based Care: Improving medical care is an on-going goal of the ATN, Our sites use research data and quality improvement methodology to implement best practice.  Coordinated, multidisciplinary care is provided at our ATN locations to assist children with ASD including those with more challenging and complex medical needs. ATN member sites provide care for more than 30,000 children and teens each year from a variety of subspecialists, including
      • Pediatricians
      • Child psychiatrists and psychologists
      • Neurologists
      • Specialists in gastrointestinal, metabolic and sleep disorders
      • Therapists, counselors and specialty services
    • Dissemination and Training for Professionals: It is an ATN imperative that the important work of the network be shared to other ASD centers, physicians, and therapists beyond the network to improve medical care for all children with ASD. Clinical and health-related research outcomes
      • Information dissemination and training for professionals
      • Publishing, presenting, and promoting evidence-based guidelines and other tools
      • Multidisciplinary training and mentoring to medical and graduate level students
    • Outreach and Family Education: Ongoing education is available to families and communities through the ATN to promote more informed, family-centered decision-making processes that address the needs of the child. Services include:
      • Up-to-date information about effective care and treatment of patients with ASD
      • Evidence/consensus-based, family-centered tool kits and training materials
    • Research Opportunities: A large part of the network's focus is centered around clinical and health-related research of individuals with autism. The network has collected behavioral and medical data from children seen in the network facilities. This data is stored in a Registry Database and includes phenotypic data on more than 6,900 children and teens ranging from 2-17 ½ years of age and is available for selected use to outside researchers. Biomaterial data is also available on a subset of those individuals.

    History of Funding

    As a result of ATN and AIR-P funded research, 18 studies have been completed on various autism-related topics such as:
    • Nutrition and obesity
    • Sleep disorders,
    • Metabolic, genetic and gastrointestinal concerns
    • Neurological and behavioral outcomes
    • Communication deficits and services.

    Additional Information

    Scientific Research Grants and Fellowship Programs:
    The Autism Intervention Research Network on Physical Health (AIR-P) is a collaborative among the Autism Speaks Autism Treatment Network (ATN), the ATN Clinical Coordinating Center at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children (MGHfC) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The Autism Intervention Research Network on Physical Health (AIR-P) solicits proposals to address critical questions in improving medical care for children and youth with autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders. This collaboration will support innovative projects that will address feasibility and the first stage of a trial that can lead to changes in treatment for children with ASD and other related conditions. The intention of this competition is to allow investigators to demonstrate feasibility and potential for success to justify expansion to a full multi- center study that can lead to changes and improvements in medical care in autism.

    2017 Weatherstone Fellowships: The primary purpose of the Weatherstone fellowship is to provide highly qualified candidates with exceptional research training opportunities broadly related to the study of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Areas of research Autism Speaks is most interested in include:
    • behavioral, psychosocial and /or educational challenges;
    • language / communication;
    • genetics and/or genomics;
    • medical and psychiatric comorbidities;
    • biomedical and/or pharmacological interventions;
    • neuroscience;
    • translational research and precision medicine.
    Applications which include the availability of better treatments both for underlying pathology as well as coexisting conditions that decrease quality of life for those with autism will be of particular interest.

    Meixner Postdoctoral Fellowships in Translational Research: The Meixner Postdoctoral Fellowships in Translational Research support postdoctoral researchers pursuing projects that bridge laboratory science and clinical studies enrolling people affected by autism. Each fellow works under the guidance of mentors who rank among the field's pioneers in basic and clinical research. The goal is to train a new generation of autism researchers while translating basic science into new and effective ways of diagnosing, treating and supporting individuals living with autism.
