    Summary

    The Traffic Safety Division (TSD) of the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) has primary responsibility for managing safety programs designed to reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries. TSD partners with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Federal Highway Safety Administration (FHWA), the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and other national and local traffic safety partners to develop and fund statewide and community-level strategies and projects that will have the greatest impact reducing crashes, fatalities and injuries. 


    TSD will give priority to the following highway safety projects: 

    Highway safety grants are intended to provide the seed money” to begin new programs, much like start-up capital is to a new business. All grant-funded projects are intended to become self-sufficient when grant funding terminates and are expected to continue to operate with local or state funds.

    Additional Information

    Funding will be on a reimbursable basis. The expenses for the approved program will be paid initially by the agency. These expenditures will be reimbursed to the agency from the Traffic Safety Education and Enforcement Fund upon submission of required documentation per the Traffic Safety Project Management and Accounting Manual to be provided by the Bureau.

  • Eligibility Details

    Eligible applicants are NM local governments, state agencies, law enforcement agencies, schools/universities, and not-for-profit agencies.  

    Deadline Details

    Communities will be notified of annual funding amounts and appropriate deadlines by the Traffic Safety Bureau in August, annually. 

    Award Details

    Funds are distributed in in proportion to the amount of fees collected by the courts and the law enforcement agencies initiating the arrest in applicant community. Communities will be notified by the Traffic Safety Bureau of the amount of funding they are eligible to receive each year. Cost sharing/matching of 25% is required. Proposed projects should extend for 12-months, starting January 1, annually.
