    Summary

    The Cooperative Fire Protection Assistance (CFPA) Grant Program provides financial and technical assistance to North Dakota fire departments in cities or communities with a population under 10,000. The primary objectives of the program are saving lives and protecting property in rural areas.


    In North Dakota, CFPA funds may be used for the following purposes:

    • Vehicle purchases - Brush trucks, pumpers, tenders, etc.
    • Wildland PPE and Training - (1) Wildland pants, shirts, shelter, boots, helmets, and gloves; (2) Priority will be given to NWCG and ICS courses. 
    • Communications and Wildland equipment - (1) Radios, pagers (must be P-25 compliant); (2) Fire line tools, pulaskis, shovels, flappers, etc.; (3) Pumps, hose, drop tanks, etc.
    • Structural PPE - Structural turnout gear, helmets, boots, air packs, etc.
    • Structural Firefighting tools - Pike poles, ventilation saws, generators, etc.

    None is available. 

    Additional Information

    Grant funding for fire hall construction or the purchase of town sirens, or EMS/rescue equipment supplies are not eligible. Purchases made prior to project approval do not qualify for funding.

  • Eligibility Details

    Eligible applicants are North Dakota fire departments serving a rural area or a rural community with a population of 10,000 or less. 

    Deadline Details

    2022 CFPA Grant Applications NOW available! Applications must be emailed or postmarked by Friday, November 18, 2022. A similar deadline is anticipated annually. 

    Award Details

    Awards vary based on project category. Cost sharing/matching of 50% the total project cost is required.

    • Project Awards - Awards for firefighting gear and other personal protective equipment (PPE), tools, communication equipment, etc. are up to $10,000 for a project. A department may spend more than $20,000 but the maximum award amount will not exceed $10,000. Single item total purchase price cannot exceed $4,999.
    • Vehicle Awards - Awards may be up to $20,000 for a vehicle. A department may spend more than $40,000 but the maximum amount awarded will not exceed $20,000.
