    Summary

    The goal of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is to improve the health and health care of Americans, including residents of U.S. territories. 


    Grants and grant programs generally have three major aims:

    1. Discover and Explore - Seeking creative solutions through targeted solicitations and an ongoing request for bold ideas with transformative potential.
    2. Spreading Model Interventions - Identifying and expanding public policies, community-based programs, system changes and other interventions that are having a meaningful impact on health.
    3. Conduct Research and Evaluation - Expanding the evidence around key health issues, and evaluating, learning from, and sharing key lessons both from RWJF grantmaking and from other health-improvement initiatives tied to areas of interest.

    RWJF funds a wide range of activities, including but not limited to:

    • Planning and demonstration projects
    • Research and evaluations
    • Policy and statistical analysis
    • Learning networks and communities
    • Public education and strategic communications
    • Community engagement and coalition-building
    • Training and fellowship programs
    • Technical assistance

    Additional Information

    RWJF funds many initiatives in support of their vision for a Culture of Health. However, we do not make grants to individuals, and very infrequently support foreign organizations or organizations that are not tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Specific activities they do not fund include:
    • Ongoing general operating expenses or existing deficits
    • Endowment or capital costs
    • Basic biomedical research
    • Research on drug therapies or devices
    • Lobbying of any kind

  • Eligibility Details

    Eligible applicants are nonprofit organizations and public agencies. For-profit organizations may be funded under rare circumstances.


    RWJF awards most grants through calls or requests for proposals. They do, however, award a limited number of grants for projects that: 1) suggest new and creative approaches to solving health and health care problems; and 2) that fit squarely within our areas of focus and support our strategic objectives.     Each call for proposals has its own schedule of deadlines. Please make note of these deadlines when applying.

    Award Details

    Amounts awarded and time periods vary widely and depend on the scope of the project.

    Over the last five years, RWJF has made awards ranging from $3,000 to $23 million with time periods ranging from one month to five years. However, most grants are in the $100,000 to $300,000 range, and run from one to three years.
