    Summary

    The Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant Program provides financial and technical assistance to Mississippi fire departments in cities or communities with a population under 10,000. The primary objectives of the program are saving lives and protecting property in rural areas.


    Due to the small amount of funds available for the entire state program, only applications for assistance in purchasing firefighting equipment will be accepted. Approved items of equipment include the following:

    • Tanks, pumps, hose, hose reels, hose fittings, nozzles, sirens, emergency lights and ladders.
    • Slip-on units, complete (tanks, pump, hose, etc.) for converting trucks to pumper units.
    • Communication equipment (two-way radios) with statewide firefighting frequency (154.160 MHZ) and pagers” with tone alert and audio receivers.
    • Hand tools (back-pack pumps, fire axes, pike poles, drip torches, fire flaps, fire extinguishers, etc.)
    • Wildland protective items for firefighters (Nomex shirts, pants, jumpsuits, wildland helmets,boots, gloves, etc.)

    Additional Information

    VFA Funding will not be provided for:
    • Salaries, labor charges, service charges, utilities, installation or repair charges, supplies (batteries, etc.)
    • Trucks to be converted to fire apparatuses.
    • Cost of structural improvements or real estate.
    • Fire trucks complete (chassis, tank, pump, etc.).
    • Costs of rescue units or other rescue equipment which will not be carried on fire trucks.
    • Citizen band radios.
    • Cost for equipment on hand, ordered or purchased prior to the announcement date.

  • Eligibility Details

    Eligible applicants are Mississippi fire departments serving a rural area or a rural community with a population of 10,000 or less. 

    Only departments made up of at least 75% volunteer firefighters are eligible for this grant.


    Deadline Details

    Applications were due July 15, 2020. A similar deadline is anticipated annually.

    Award Details

    Individual awards may be up to $4,500.  Cost sharing/matching of 50% the total project cost is required.
