The objective of the Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) program is to improve the capacity and capability of rural and volunteer fire protection districts. These districts protect rural communities and play a substantial cooperative role in the suppression of wildland fires within or near federally managed lands.
In Virginia, eligible applicants may request fire-related equipment. Priority will be given to wildland personal protective equipment, wildland firefighting tools, communications equipment or training.
None is available.
Grant funding for fire hall construction or the purchase of new fire trucks, town sirens, or EMS/rescue equipment supplies are not eligible. Purchases made prior to project approval do not qualify for funding.
Eligible applicants are Virginia fire departments serving a rural area or a rural community with a population of 10,000 or less.
Applications are to be submitted by March 31, annually. For 2023, the deadline has been extended to April 30, 2023.
Individual awards vary. Cost sharing/matching of 50% the total project cost is required. This is a reimbursement grant.
